Restorations – Root Canal Therapy
When the nerve of the tooth experiences degeneration or infection root canal therapy is necessary. To recover the tooth, the pulp – soft tissue within the tooth, nerves, and bacteria, are replaced with medicated dental components to restore the tooth and its role.
Root canal therapy salvages a tooth from death or removal. It is often thought by patients that extracting a decaying tooth is the best resolution. In actuality, removing a tooth is costly and may harm surrounding teeth.
Root canal therapy often has a healthy outcome and long-lasting. Occasionally, teeth may need to be reworked if new infections are present.
Root Canal Therapy may be required if:
· A pimple or boil on the gums (abscess) appear
· Teeth sensitivity to heat and cold
· Excruciating toothaches
· Inflammation and swelling
· No symptoms at all
Reasons for root canal treatment:
· Tooth pulp decay
· Abscess or infection within the tooth
· Damage or stress to the tooth
The requirements of root canal therapy
Root canal treatments involve one or more dental visits. The therapy is completed by a dentist or endodontist, a dentist specializing in root canals.
The tooth is the first number, then surrounded by a rubber dam to keep the area dry and clear of saliva. Special dental tools are used to create a slot at the top of the tooth. Single-file, root canal instruments are inserted to withdraw the damaged pulp, nerve, and bacteria. Tooth decay is also extracted if present.
The tooth is thoroughly washed and sealed with a permanent or temporary filling. A temporary filling is used if additional visits are scheduled.
During the follow-up visit, the remaining roots and inside tooth are sealed and filled. The opening at the top of the tooth is then closed. Most importantly, the tooth will be crowned for protection and to prevent damage. Teeth may be sensitive after the root canal procedure but will ease as the tooth recovers.
After the visit, specific instructions will be given for at-home care. Maintaining proper oral hygiene and routine care appointments will help to prolong root canal treatment. Schedule your appointment today
